Apollo Bramwell Hospital has been chosen to host the first training workshop for clinical trials in Mauritius by global pharmaceutical giant Pfizer on 9 and 10 October 2014.
Clinical trials are used to determine the most effective and safest treatment for a disease. They offer patients and volunteers access to new and up-to-date treatment options that are otherwise generally not available.
“Pfizer has selected Mauritius for this international workshop and is working in partnership with Apollo Bramwell Hospital to deliver the program locally. The workshop, which will be conducted by experts from Pfizer, will provide Mauritian doctors, nurses and pharmacists with insight into the drug discovery process. Participants will be taken through the key steps involved in conducting a clinical trial,” explained Dr. Fatima Murad, Chief Research Officer at Apollo Bramwell Hospital.
Apollo Bramwell Hospital has its own Clinical Trial Unit (CTU) dedicated to promoting and coordinating clinical trials in Mauritius. The hospital’s CTU is driven to build local research capacity, provide quality services and encourage sustainable partnerships, hence enabling the partnership with Pfizer.
The hospital’s Clinical Trials Unit also serves as a one-stop resource centre to match potential clinical trial sponsors with doctors, and provide support to clinicians in conducting high-quality clinical trials. It currently has several trials in the pipeline, which include conditions such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, breast cancer and ischemic heart disease.
“Mauritius is well-placed to perform clinical trials, since it already has the required legal framework (Clinical Trials Act adopted in 2011). This is further facilitated by an excellent level of healthcare infrastructure, the availability of skilled health care professionals, the presence of a unique multi-ethnic population and the population’s bilingualism” explained Dr Murad.
Pfizer is one of the world's premier innovative biopharmaceutical companies, involved in the discovery, development and manufacture of health care products. The company’s global portfolio includes medicines and vaccines as well as many of the world’s best-known consumer health care products. The US-based company has a history of over 150 years in the field of pharmaceuticals.
