Urology

This Centre of Excellence combines a state-of-the-art infrastructure, cutting edge technology and phenomenal expertise under one roof to bring a world class Renal Care Centre to the region.

The Centre provides services in the following areas:

Minimally Invasive Surgery in Urology

Many traditional urologic surgical procedures require large incisions with lengthy hospitalization and recovery. Minimally invasive surgery has recently been developed in the field of urologic surgery with the advancement of engineering and computer technologies. Minimally invasive surgery has been applied to a multitude of benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (oncologic or cancerous) urologic problems. Furthermore, it has been applied to conditions affecting a variety of urologic organs (including kidney, adrenal gland, ureter, bladder, prostate, lymph nodes).

Traditional Laparoscopy

Using a small telescope with built-in magnification mechanism and a variety of long, thin surgical instruments placed through approximately 3-5 incisions (each of which is usually no larger than a dime in size), the surgeon is able to perform minimally invasive surgery for a variety of urologic diseases and problems. Patients who have undergone these procedures have enjoyed not only the same diagnostic and therapeutic benefits of traditional open surgery but also greatly reduced postoperative pain, shorter hospitalization, faster recovery, and better cosmetic results.

Robotic Surgery

Robotic-assisted surgery is a leading edge technology. Because it is minimally invasive, the precision of robotic technology is ideal for delicate and complex urologic surgeries. These include prostatectomies, in which the target site is tightly confined and surrounded by nerves affecting urinary control and erectile function. Surgeons using a robotic system have an exacting tool for avoiding damage to surrounding nerves and helping enhance recovery times and the return to normal activities.

Benefits to the patient :

Robotic surgery enables surgeons to perform a more precise operation than conventional surgery. It offers several potential benefits over a conventional open surgery, including:

  • Significantly less pain
  • Less blood loss
  • Less risk of infection
  • Less scarring
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Quicker recovery time
  • Better clinical outcomes in many cases

Endoscopic Surgery

The endoscopic surgeries are performed through natural orifices. We offer endoscopic procedures for patients with urinary stones, kidney stones, ureteric stones, bladder cancers, urethral strictures, and ureteral stricture and problems pertaining to the prostate.

Others :

Treatment for Urinary Incontinence using minimally-invasive techniques.

The transobturator tape (TOT) sling procedure aims to eliminate stress urinary incontinence by providing support under the urethra. This minimally-invasive procedure eliminates retropubic needle passage and involves inserting a mesh tape under the urethra through three small incisions in the groin area. While the procedure has shown risks during its infancy, recent developments have increased the cure rate to 90%.

Extra Corpeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL)

Kidney stones usually develop in the kidneys or anywhere in the urinary tract. Stones may present with severe pain and blood in the urine or a urinary tract infection. If left untreated, they may cause damage to the kidneys. With the introduction of ESWL at Apollo Bramwell Hospital, we now have the full range of treatments to deal with all types of stones. ESWL is a procedure operated by experienced urologists to fragment stones using shock waves generated outside the body.

Uro-Oncology

The Kidney and Urology Centre at Apollo Bramwell provides minimally invasive surgery for almost all urological cancers.

Techniques include laparoscopic radical nephrectomy (removal of a kidney by key-hole surgery), laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (key-hole removal of only the tumor containing part of kidney), TURBT (knifeless removal of bladder cancers using endoscopic technique) and laparoscopic adrenalectomy (removal of adrenal tumors through key-hole surgery). The center also provides the service of radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer. The Urology team together with the Medical Oncologists provides inpatient, outpatient, care for patients with newly-diagnosed urological cancer, in addition to a follow up service for existing uro-oncology patients.

Urodynamic Services

We have a modern urodynamic suite. It offers a diagnostic solution for neurogenic bladder or other lower urinary tract functional disorders.

Kidney Transplantation (in  the future)

The centre will offer kidney transplants to patients with kidney failure. We will offer laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (retrieval of kidney from the donor through key-hole surgery) to minimize the hospital stay, postoperative pain and a quick return to work after donation of a kidney.

Nephrology and Dialysis

The Dialysis Suite is equipped with a state of art infrastructure, modern technology and expertise. We offer hemodialysis, renal biopsy and many other nephrology services to aid in the management of acute and chronic renal disease.

Pediatric Uro-Nephrology

We offer minimally invasive surgical solutions for congenital anomalies like laparoscopic pyeloplasty, cystoscopic reflux therapy and laparoscopic pediatric uro-onco-surgery
