Diagnostic tests done at Apollo Bramwell Hospital

Mammography Screening: Screening mammogram is an X-ray test to look for the breast cancer in normal women who do not have any symptoms. It can reveal the cancer before it is felt. High-risk women and women above the age of 40 are recommended to undergo mammography once a year.

Sonomammography: It is usually used as an adjunct to mammogram as they complement each other and improve sensitivity and specificity. Fine needle aspiration cytology: This simple procedure done with a syringe and needle without anesthesia. This can be done with or without sonography depending on the indication. A little material like blood is removed from the mass and smears are prepared to look for cancer. Tru-cut biopsy: This is done by the radiologist or surgeons with or without the help of a sonography. The report will be available by the evening of the next day.

MR Mammography: This is a “problem solving” modality for lesions deemed as indeterminate on mammography/ sonomammography. It is recommended to high risk individuals. Patient’s with suspected breast implant rupture/leak will benefit from this specialized test.

Immunohistochemistry study: It is a highly specialized test to look for the hormone status of patient with breast cancer to decide the type of treatment to be administered and also to know the prognosis of patients. Sterotactic Breast Biopsy: These require a great degree of shill and accuracy for localization of lesions with “micro calcifications” and non palpable masses. Apollo Bramwell provides this service exclusively in Mauritius.

Treatment options for breast cancer

The main types of treatment offered at Apollo Bramwell Hospital include surgery, chemotherapy, and hormonal therapy:

Depending on the type and stage of the disease, the patient has to undergo either a partial or a complete removal of the breast. If detected early, the woman might not have to lose her breast.

Chemotherapy is the use of various drugs combined with injections to kill cancer cells and shrink the tumour. This treatment is given as an intravenous infusion usually as an outpatient procedure.

Hormonotherapy includes oral drugs which are normally prescribed for 5 years after completion of chemotherapy in hormone-sensitive breast cancers. In hormonal therapy, the side-effects are temporary, manageable and reversible.

Tumour Board

The tumor board, which is a unique feature of the Apollo Bramwell Hospital, facilitates interaction of all specialists such as the Surgeon, Radiologist, Pathologist and Medical oncologist on one platform to discuss the best approach for treatment to the cancer patient.
