A simple routine of brushing for two minutes, twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between the teeth, good eating habits, having sugary food and drinks less often and regular dental check-ups can help prevent most dental problems. Most people would need a visit to the dentist at least once a year, some may even require more visits as recommended by the dentist.
Brushing twice a day with a soft to medium tooth brush and any toothpaste that contains fluoride is recommended. Use small circular movements gently ensuring that all surfaces of the teeth are brushed. For some people electric tooth brushes may be more effective in removing plaque. Brushing and cleaning the tongue will help freshen the breath by removing the bacteria on the tongue surface. Brushing too aggressively or using a very hard brush can be detrimental to the health of the teeth and gums and causes problems like teeth sensitivity.
Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between your teeth and under the gumline, areas a toothbrush can't reach. Teeth should be flossed at least once a day.
Teeth can become sensitive due to many reasons but more commonly is a symptom of tooth decay, similarly gum bleeding is usually due to gingivitis which is caused by dental plaque and tartar. Visiting the dentist in case of these symptoms is advisable.
Smoking can lead to tooth staining, gum disease, tooth loss and - more seriously - mouth cancer. One of the effects of smoking is staining on the teeth due to the nicotine and tar in tobacco. It can make the teeth yellow in a very short time.
Cosmetic or esthetic dentistry is a way of improving a person’s appearance by correcting their teeth. This includes treatments to straighten, lighten, reshape and repair teeth through veneers, crowns, bridges, tooth-colored fillings, implants and tooth whitening.
Many young people face trouble when wisdom teeth erupt. In many situations these teeth do not have sufficient space to erupt and cause infections and tooth decay. Since a small surgical procedure is required for removal of this tooth a consultation with a maxillofacial surgeon is recommended.
A dental implant is a titanium screw that is placed in the jaw bone to replace a missing tooth. Implants are safe and a cost effective way to regain a lost smile and the ability to chew. It is much more esthetic than conventional bridges and more comfortable than a denture.
