Collagen Corneal Cross Linking is a treatment for patients suffering from Keratoconus diseases, an eye condition quite widespread in Mauritius and in tropical countries.
Keratoconus is a corneal degeneration characterized by bilateral protrusion and corneal thinning.
At Apollo Bramwell Hospital we perform Corneal Collagen Cross Linking (CXL), one of the most exciting surgical innovations of modern ophthalmology which addresses the corneal biomechanical weakening described in Keratoconus. CXL with riboflavin and UV-A has been used in several studies in an attempt to enhance corneal biomechanical resistance by an increase in collagen fibre diameters, thereby halting the progression of Keratoconus.
In our commitment to keep pace with evolving technology and continuous medical education, our Senior Consultant in Ophthalmology, Dr Bharti Sharma attended the 11th International Congress of Corneal Cross-Linking at Boston, United States of America on the 4th and 5th of December. She presented a poster on “Corneal Flattening After Collagen Cross Linking in Progressive Keratoconus – Two Years Results” thereby representing our hospital and promoting the image of Mauritius at international level.
The poster was well received and the medical fraternity from all over the world was impressed with such high class treatment facility available in Mauritius. In her poster she presented the results of 69 eyes with progressive Keratoconus which underwent CXL at our hospital. We followed the patients post CXL for 2 years. All of our patients showed clinically significant reduction in Kmax, decrease in astigmatism and improvement in vision post CXL (maximum follow up 2 years).
About 200 participants representing more than 45 countries attended the conference. This revolutionary treatment method has spread to countries all over the world. The purpose of this meeting was to disseminate information concerning the uses of CXL by providing a broad scope of understanding. From a general introduction to the field to debating the latest research, the congress’ aim was to allow each participant to be able to learn and apply the teachings and information in his/her practice. The current research in treatment for Keratoconus as well as newer indications being studied outside the US such as the use of cross-linking for refractive applications and results of FDA trials conducted so far in USA were all discussed.
The newer advances in Keratoconus treatments further is Refractive CXL.
We have been doing this also from past 1 year as per Athen’s protocol. Here we reshape the keratoconic cornea with excimer laser and proceed with CXL in the same sitting.
Dr Bharti Sharma has been doing Corneal Cross Linking from the past 3 years at Apollo Bramwell Hospital and Refractive CXL from the past 1 year for patients with Keratoconus. So far, she has done 283 CXL treatments with good results.
Jane and I wanted to thank you so much for the care you and your colleagues took of Jane whist in Mauritius. Everything went well and Prakash did a great job of getting us to your clinic and back over the 6 dialysis days. We had a wonderful holiday and our children and grandchildren plus the other family all enjoyed it enormously. Best wishes to you all
Andrew and Jane Stewart
